On April 26,2014, we celebrated Día with a 3 hour long festival at the library/City Hall with our largest celebration yet.  Just over 500 hundred community members celebrated with us! The Springfield City Mayor opened the celebrations.  All youth who attended were able to receive a free book. Our celebrations opened with a family concert by famed bilingual author and performer José-Luis Orozco. We had fantastic performances by Alma de México folclórico dance, Springfield High School’s Mariachi de Sol and Taller Son Jarocho Eugene.  Fun crafts and activities were hosted by the following community organizations: Community Health Centers of Lane County; Downtown Languages; Springfield Public Schools/Brattain House; SPICE; SMART; Migrant Education Program; Food for Lane County; Metropolitan Affordable Housing and Willamalane.

We send a big thank you to the Eugene Public Library for collaborating with us in the planning of both libraries’ events so that we could bring in a well-known author and better market our two libraries’ events to the larger county community.

We’d like to thank the following groups for their donations that helped make our celebration possible: Community Health Centers of Lane County, the Springfield Arts Commission, the United Way of Lane County, and SELCO Community Credit Union.

El Día de los Niños/ El Día de los Libros = Children’s Day/ Book Day

Día is a celebration every day of children, families and reading, that culminates yearly with celebrations held across the country on or near April 30th. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

As celebrated by libraries and librarians, Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, a celebration which took hold in 1925 following the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. Each country selected its own day for the celebration with Mexico and many other Latin American countries choosing April 30.

We had a fabulous Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros celebration at Springfield Public Library in 2013. We would like to thank all the volunteers, agencies, and presenters who helped make our celebration so wonderful! In addition to fabulous crafts and activities hosted by partner agencies, the day's events included a welcome by Springfield Mayor Christine Lundberg, bilingual storytelling by Carmen “T” Bernier-Grand, an award-winning children’s book author, storyteller, and educator; music and dance by Taller de Son Jarocho Eugene; folklórico dance by Alma de México; and Bhangra Dance with Sat Pavan Kaur Khalsa.
